Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations around the world mark World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on May 8. This date marks the birth of Henry Dunnant , a founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. At the same time, the Week of the Red Cross and Red Crescent begins on this date, and lasts until 15.of May

This year, on this date we celebrate the strength and results of our global network, as well as the contribution of our staff and volunteers in the fight against the Corona virus pandemic.

By celebrating our Day and the Week, we also promote true heroes in Bosnia and Herzegovina

I can say that  our volunteers are the greatest heroes of this time. Heroes who work out of pure love for others. I commend the efforts of others, but I can say that our volunteers are graduated heroes, who unselfishly give of theselves to help others , putting themselves at risk to work and provide support in such  difficult situations, without insurance and without financial support. And that is our greatest strength "- said Rajko Lazić, Secretary General of the Red Cross Society of BiH

RCSBIH structure  has been involved in responding to coronavirus pandemic from its very beggining. Instead of citizens, RC volunteers have provided,  in more than 80 cities and municipalities, over 5,000 services of bying groceries and medicine, and distributed more than 19,000 food and hygiene parcels to beneficiaries of public kitchens and socially vulnerable families. In addition to this, they distributed more than 40,000 information leaflets on preventive measures and more than 100,000 protective masks, gloves and disinfectants.

Snjezana Kovač, Acting Secretary General of the RS Red Cross: "We are also carrying out our traditional action, for which we received the approval of the Ministry of Health, given that this is a very specific situation, and that is  the distribution of baby parcels, which we have been carrying out for 15 years." These parcels are  intended for babies born on May 8 and during the Red Cross Week. We will distribute 65 parcels in all maternity hospitals in Republika Srpska. There is also a traditional distribution of humanitarian parcels to Red Cross aid beneficiaries, which will be distributed  through municipal and city organizations.

Namik Hodžić, Secretary General of the RCFBIH said: "Situations like this one ,we are facing right now- a coronavirus pandemic, are  the best indicator of how important Red Cross volunteers are for the  society. Namely, more than 800 volunteers and 135 professionals have been made available since the declaration of the state of a disaster in the Federation. I also take this opportunity to thank the volunteers who, as many times before, do their volunteer work with dedication and dignity. Our dear volunteers - you are the true strength of the Red Cross of the Federation of BiH, our pride and guardians of humanity and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The Red Cross of Brčko District BiH, in cooperation with the police and according to the standards set by the World Health Organization, transports persons at risk who  enter Bosnia and Herzegovina from neighboring countries and reside in Brčko. They also disinfect public areas in their city.

All above activities of  RCSBIH structure would not be possible without the support of partners from the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement: the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies,  Swiss Red Cross and Turkish Red Crescent. As a token  of gratitude and  support to the staff and volunteers of the Red Cross, last night the members of the Red Cross Movement painted the building of the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo, the Old Bridge in Mostar and the building of the City Administration in Bijeljina into the colours of the Red Cross.

Elmir : We- the ICRC, within our mandate,  support our  partners here in BiH, particularly their activities on missing persons,   prisons, forensic medicine, etc. However, even this would not be possible without the dedicated work of volunteers and staff who work in the field.  They are the real strength of our movement and true heroes in this difficult situation. I must say that the people in BiH are not alone, because they have all those volunteers and staff by their side. But on the other hand, RCSBIH is not alone in its efforts, because it has the full support of all members of our movement tht are presents  in this country.

RCSBH volunteers, particularly those of  Una-Sana Canton Red Cross, risking their safety, make superhuman efforts to provide assistance to migrants in BiH. These efforts were also recognized by the competent institutions, where in the previous period, an agreement was signed between RCSBIH  and the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees of BiH, for the implementation of projects for the most vulnerable people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. An agreement was also signed with the Austrian Red Cross, which, together with the BH diaspora launched a campaign to support the structure of RCSBIH. Cooperation has also been established with the Kuwait Red Crescent and the Italian Red Cross.
